This means eating a variety of foods each day and avoiding foods that can cause damage to parts of our body, like our teeth and heart. The Food Pyramid helps us make good food choices each day.
With the Book Fair coming to our school next week, each class compiled a list of books they'd recommend for their age group. Quite often, some children can get stuck in a rut when it comes to book choices, or become overwhelmed with the number of books, series and authors out there. We hope these lists will help to guide the boys and their parents when choosing books in the Book Fair, for Christmas and beyond!

On Friday the 24th of June, Belgrove SBS will have a Shorts n Shades non-uniform day in aid of the Rhombo Belgrove school project in Kenya. As you can see from the video all funds raised will go to supplying books and food for pupils of the school. We look forward to continuing to support this worthy cause. The entrance to our school is looking very bright and welcoming thanks to the wonderful work of our Parents’ Association. Hanging baskets, lollipop trees, planters, window boxes, and colourful flowers now adorn the entrance, with more bulbs due for planting in the autumn. A big thank you to Mary Beth Porter, Anita Murray, Elaine McKiernan, Sarah Henriques and Maria Ryan for taking on the project and giving of their time to plan, design, source and sow. We really appreciate your enthusiasm and efforts. A special thank you to Nolan’s Hardware, Tully Nurseries and Jones Garden Centre who kindly provided discounts on the bedding and plants.
Over 80 fourth class pupils from Belgrove Senior Boys School are taking part in the new Primary Language Sampler starting this term. The sampler module is a means of raising awareness among pupils of the range of languages used by their peers, in their schools and community. Over 500 schools nationwide are taking part and offering modules in a range of modern foreign languages and Irish Sign Language. The module will introduce our pupils to Japanese and be taught over a 6-week period during the normal school timetable. Tutor Tamao Oka is delighted to be involved in sharing her language and experience with the pupils. A native of Japan, Tamao has been living in Dublin for a number of years and has children of her own who attend their local primary school. Already, the boys have taken part in origami art activities as well as learning about school life in Japan and practising greetings, colours, numbers, shapes and the months in Japanese. Each pupil has received a ‘Language Passport’ to document his progress and raise his awareness. Being involved in this programme will help the pupils to appreciate the importance of languages as a life skill. It is an opportunity for the pupils to think in a different way and build opportunities for the future. With almost 20 languages spoken by the pupils and staff of our school, this module really helps to build awareness and celebrate the diversity within the school and community. The module is being rolled out with the support of Languages Connect and PPLI (Post-Primary Languages Ireland), a unit of the Department of Education.

The MS Readathon continues this month in Belgrove Senior Boys’ School. The MS Readathon is an epic reading challenge in which children ( and adults! ) are encouraged to read as much as they can during the month of November to raise vital funds for MS Ireland. MS Ireland provides services and support for people living with Multiple Sclerosis. Not only are we aiming to raise as much money as possible for MS Ireland, we also hope that the boys’ love of reading will be reignited.
