The word neurodiversity refers to the idea that there are natural variations in the way that human brains process information.
It is estimated that 15-20% of the population worldwide are neurodivergent - meaning that their brain processes and learns information differently from the neurotypical majority. Diagnoses such as Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia and Tourette’s all come under the umbrella of neurodivergence. People who are neurodivergent sometimes experience learning difficulties in school because these conditions sometimes mean that they need to access learning in different ways from the more typical learning strategies used in schools.

According to Siena Castellon, founder of Neurodiversity Celebration Week, the aim of Neurodiversity Celebration Week is to flip the narrative so that people recognise and celebrate the strengths and talents of neurodivergent individuals. Neurodivergent individuals have many talents, for example they may be creative, innovative, outside the box thinkers, problem-solvers and skilled at pattern recognition. Possession of these skills are a significant advantage in the workplace. It is estimated that 35% of entrepreneurs in the United States are dyslexic and that many of the tech-entrepreneurs working in Silicon Valley are Autistic. It is important for neurodivergent students to know that irrespective of the struggles they face at school, in the right environment, they can be incredibly successful and can still have ambitions and hopes and dreams, just like everyone else.
