After such a strong showing in the football, hopes were very high for our senior hurlers in 2019. The season began in March with two trials on pitch 21. Over sixty boys turned out before we arrived at a panel of nineteen. Our panel consisted of players from Clontarf and Scoil Uí Chonaill GAA Clubs. Again this year we were taking part in the Corn Hearld competition, the premier division of Dublin primary school Hurling.
Our first game of the group stage was against St Mary’s of Lucan. We played with a strong wind in the first half and had a great start. Lucan however upped their game in the second half and were too strong for us. In the end they deserved their victory by two goals. After the disappointment of our first game the boys regrouped and convincingly beat Marino and Diswellstown to qualify second in the group. Phoenix Park was the venue for our semi final victory over Knocklyon.
The 10th of June will be forever remembered in the history of Belgrove. Our boys arrived in Croke Park determined to give a performance to remember and they didn’t disappoint. Lucan, the only team to defeat us in the group stages must of felt they were playing a different team as we led 0-10 to 1-03 at half time. Lucan responded strongly in the second half but we held our nerve and won 1-15 to 1-09 in the end of an epic encounter. Our captain lifted the cup at the foot of the Cusack Stand and history was made. Belgrove Senior Boys school had done the double!
The panel of nineteen boys were a pleasure to work with and a credit to themselves. A special thanks to Clontarf GAA club, for the use of the astroturf for early morning training, parents for organising flags and nets and for providing lifts and support to away games.
